Shea Eden enjoyed the biggest success of his short career to date last Saturday at Caulfield when his explosive mare Ocean Embers stormed to victory to claim the $150,000 G3 Ladbrokes Cockram Stakes.

While the pint-sized mare’s rise to prominence may have caught a few onlookers by surprise this spring, winning three of her four starts to take her record to four wins and a second from just seven runs, it came as no surprise to Shea.

“I’ve planned for this sort of result. Everything I have done in the last three years has been aimed towards getting results like this in town, winning group races and growing our business,” he said.

“To unearth an exceptional talent like Ocean Embers, arguably the most exciting sprinting mare in the country, is just a bonus - and one that I’ll happily take!”

Eden’s rise has been as carefully planned as Ocean Embers’ spring preparation. He has not rushed to grow his stable beyond its means and has not tried to outrun important experience and knowledge that only comes by making mistakes.

“I was a chippie, a builder by trade but I loved horses and always wanted to work with them - I decided if I was going to give it a go, I’d better learn how to do it right just like a trade apprenticeship,” he said. Eden sought out trainers and horsemen that he believed could help him gain that knowledge, including renowned trainer Mick Kent, and set out on his own from a humble property at Corinella.

Now in command of a growing team at his Cranbourne base, and increased interest in his stable and the horses he has on offer for shares, Shea has risen to 13 in the trainer premiership rankings as a result of Ocean Embers’ win.
